Integumentary System
The integumentary system is a complex system that includes hair, nails, exocrine glands, and, the skin. The skin is the largest organ in the body. The purpose of the skin is to protect the body from chemicals, diseases, UV light, and physical damage. The purpose of the hair and nails that extend from the skin is to form another barrier to protect the skin. The skin is also very flexible and helps with movement.
Diseases
Fungal InfectionsFungal infections are common in children. But they can happen to anyone. They usually effect moist areas on and in the body, Some common fungal infections are: yeast infections, thrust, ring worm, and athlete's foot.

Bacterial InfectionsBacteria has an essential role in the body. Some bacteria can help digest food and even fight off toxins. There is 1% of bacteria that is bad for people. Some examples of bacterial infections include MRSA and impetigo.

Viral Skin InfectionsViral skin infections are infections that are either genetic or can be developed. Most of the infections can be reoccurant. These infections grow and spread on the skin. Some examples of these infections are: herpes, chicken pocks (herpes simplex), and HPV (human papilo virus).

ScabiesScabies is caused by mites that live under the skin. They lay eggs and spread very quickly. Scabies is highly contagious!! They leave very visible track marks on the skin. When outbreaks occur, they are to be reported to the CDC (Center for Disease Control).

NeurofibromatosisNeurofibromatosis is a genetic disorder. It can grow outside the skin but can also grow inside. It can kill its host if it is not treated. Bumps can form which cause pain, itching, and inflammation. It creates a moist area which will lead to fungal infections if not treated. Growth on the inside of the body will cause death because it destroys the internal organs.

Skin CancerSkin cancer comes in many different forms. 3 of these forms are melanoma, squamous, and basal cell carcinoma. It is typically noticed when freckles form on the skin. The freckles can also be reported as suspicious if they change color, change in size, or grow hairs on them.

ElephantitisElephantitis is cause by a worm. The worms lay eggs and cause the skin to harden and grow tough. This is where the name comes from. The extremities of the body begin to swell. Treatment reduces swelling and the limb could go back to its normal size if the disease is treated for soon enough.

AlopeciaAlopecia is the condition of progressive hair loss. It causes small round patches of hair loss. The hair loss occurs because the effected person's immune system rejects the growth of hair.

AcneAcne is the abnormal abundance of pus filled black heads and white heads. It is common in young adults going through puberty. Acne typically occurs when the body is not used to the abundance of testosterone. It forms in the sebaceous glands.

EczemaEczema is an inflammatory disorder of the skin. It causes red, irritated skin. It is most common in newborns. It effects 10% of children. It is commonly genetic. Although some patients grow out of this disorder, it can stay with the effected for their entire life.
